  • Man United 4-0 Everton: Red Devils storm to win final pre-season tie

Jadon Sancho may have to be patient for his Premier League chance after Manchester United enjoyed a thumping end to their pre-season without him.

Sancho missed their convincing win against Rafa Benitez’s Everton after being given extra time off by his new club following a busy summer that included reaching the Euro 2020 final with England, and then completing a £73million move to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund.

The winger will train with his new team-mates for the first time on Monday and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also hopes Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane will complete his transfer next week.

Sancho could still be involved in some capacity when United face Leeds in their Premier League opener next Saturday, but the manager is wary about putting either of his stellar new signings straight into the starting line-up.

‘Jadon is in for Monday and hopefully he’ll be in decent nick and can be involved, but we have to get him through a fitness regime with us. We can’t just throw them into a game,’ said the United manager.

‘The sports science staff are doing great work to get everyone up to speed as soon as possible. With Raphael, the medical has to be done, he has had to isolate and wait for visas, but hopefully he will be with us in a few days,’

The pleasing thing for United as they plot a title challenge this season is they looked good without the new recruits. Other big hitters such as Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba enjoyed their first taste of pre-season action .

They were given a helping hand, or rather chest, by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford who continues to look more fragile in a club jersey than with England.

Bruno Fernandes made it 3-0 after just half an hour with a sensational 25-yard free-kick

After eight minutes, he allowed Lucas Digne’s headed pass to bounce off his body and into the path of Mason Greenwood, who gleefully fired United ahead.

Pickford then spilled a Fernandes shot and was relieved Anthony Martial couldn’t get onto the rebound but the respite didn’t last long.

Luke Shaw’s outswinging corner after 15 minutes was met with a powerful header from Maguire to make it 2-0.

‘His summer practising set pieces with Luke has helped us,’ smiled Solskjaer. ‘Harry knows we want more from him in his goal tally.’

Before half an hour, Fernandes had added a third with a trademark free-kick that had Pickford clutching thin air.

Everton were missing their main strikers Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, who was on Olympic final duty with Brazil, but their supporters weren’t sympathetic to Benitez, formerly in charge of their rivals Liverpool.

‘You’re getting sacked in the morning,’ some of them sung from the away end.

Pickford was taken off at half-time — one of 18 substitutions in the game — and his replacement Asmir Begovic lasted until injury-time when he was finally beaten by Diogo Dalot’s header for United’s fourth goal.

Benitez didn’t try to sugarcoat his side’s defeat. They start against Southampton in the league next weekend and it’s hard to see how they can climb from last season’s 10th place.

‘As a team we have to improve,’ said the Spaniard.

And here’s the third goal. Nothing else to say here. Just majestic from Bruno Fernandes.

    13:39

    Slabhead strikes again

Note to Lucas Digne: if you’re marking Harry Maguire in a set piece, do not let him go. The ball is likely to go his way.

Luke Shaw puts in another excellent set piece this summer (are you watching Jose Mourinho?) and the England centre-back slams home a header. Not much Jordan Pickford could do there.

    13:38

    Head in hands for Pickford

Here’s how Manchester United took the lead. Just what was Jordan Pickford thinking here?

The Toffees goalkeeper had a brilliant summer for England to put his Everton woes in the past. Now they have returned in dreadful circumstances. Back to square one.

    13:36

    HALF-TIME: Manchester Unite 3-0 Everton

Brilliant for Manchester Untied, work to do for Everton.

Jordan Pickford gifted Mason Greenwood and United the lead by palming a simple Lucas Digne header back into the United forward to tap home. Harry Maguire then headed home a Luke Shaw corner on 15 minutes before Bruno Fernandes scored a wonderful free-kick to put clear distance between them and Everton.

The Toffees have had glimpses of excellent but really are second best here.

    13:31

    Manchester United 3-0 Everton

42 mins: United just holding on to the ball and not moving it much. Everton just want to get to half-time.

It’s only a pre-season friendly and it doesn’t matter that much. But no matter how much you say it’s all a fitness exercise, United look ready for the new season so far — Everton don’t.

    13:26

    Manchester United 3-0 Everton

37 mins: Decent opportunity for Everton. Lucas Digne puts in a deep cross after a corner is cleared and Ben Godfrey is at the back post, but his header flies past the near post.

Rafa Benitez looks puzzled on the Everton bench. A big half-time talk needed.

    13:23

    Manchester United 3-0 Everton

33 mins: United have been absolutely rampant this afternoon. Everton, meanwhile, have been missing Dominic Calvert-Lewin up front. He is such a focal point for them.

Alex Iwobi, Demarai Gray and James Rodriguez have shared the centre-forward role in this first-half but Rafa Benitez’s plan has not worked.

    13:18

GOAL! Manchester United 3-0 Everton (Fernandes 29)

28 mins: Free-kick in a dangerous situation for Manchester United… and it’s in!!!

Bruno Fernandes curls the ball right over the wall and Jordan Pickford can do nothing about this one. Superb stuff from the Portuguese midfielder.

United on fire, Everton have work to do!

    13:10

    Manchester United 2-0 Everton

20 mins: The early pace of the game has slowed down again. Mason Greenwood tries to clip a ball into the far post but is too high. Donny van de Beek, meanwhile, is really setting the tempo in the heart of the midfield in a ‘number six’ role.

    13:06

WHAT A MISS! Manchester United 2-0 Everton

17 mins: Massive chance for Everton to pull one back.

Seamus Coleman whips in a lovely ball and Alex Iwobi is completely unmarked at the back post. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is tucked in too much and Donny van de Beek let the Nigerian run off him.

Iwobi shoots first time but his effort is into the side netting. Big chance that.

    13:04

GOAL! Manchester United 2-0 Everton (Maguire 15)

15 mins: And from that corner… United double their lead.

Two England defenders combine as Luke Shaw whips in an outswinging corner and Slabhea- I mean Harry Maguire puts his rather large head onto the ball, which flies into the top corner.

Lovely header, cruise control for United in this half.

    13:03

    Manchester United 1-0 Everton

13 mins: Everton finally give their defenders some rest as Alex Iwobi cuts inside who finds James Rodriguez on the edge of the area.

The Colombian clips a lovely ball over the top of the United defence but Demarai Gray is just offside as he enters the box. Nearly a nice move.

At the other end, Seamus Coleman does enough to deny Dan James a route in on goal with a superb sliding challenge to concede a corner.

    13:00

    Manchester United 1-0 Everton

11 mins: Another error from Pickford! But this time the Everton goalkeeper gets away with it.

Bruno Fernandes picks the ball up on the left and drives at the Everton defence. He cuts inside the fire an effort from 25 yards that bounces just in front of Pickford.

The Toffees shot stopper is upright and should take it easily but spills it again! Martial is on the rebound but scuffs a pass to Mason Greenwood.

The England No 1 is not a calm presence at the back so far!

    12:57

GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Everton (Greenwood 8)

8 mins: Oh no! Jordan Pickford that is terrible.

United give the ball away on the edge of the Everton box and Lucas Digne tries to head a loose ball back to the Everton goalkeeper. The England No 1 spills the simple grab and Mason Greenwood is on hand to tap home.

Brilliant for England, error-ridden for Everton. We’ve been here before. United lead.

    12:54

    Manchester United 0-0 Everton

5 mins: Luke Shaw, playing in his first game since scoring in the Euro 2020 final, whips in a corner which falls to Nemaja Matic at the back post — but Andros Townsend stops what seems like a goal-bound shot by blocking on the edge of the box.

The Red Devils still in control of possession, Donny van de Beek is always demanding the ball while Anthony Martial is not afraid to come deep in this 4-3-3 set-up

    12:52

    Manchester United 0-0 Everton

3 mins: Slow start to this game. David de Gea is put under pressure via a fierce Andros Towsend corner and flaps at it but Martin Atkinson awards a foul on the Spanish goalkeeper.

Other than that, United are dominating possession but Everton are looking dangerous on the break.

    12:48

WE’RE OFF! Manchester United 0-0 Everton

0 mins: Up and running at Old Trafford! A final pre-season outing for these two teams…

    Everton get us underway…

    12:45

    Teams are out…

The teams are coming out of the tunnel here to a massive roar from both sets of supporters. It feels good to see fans back in ground.

It’s also a first chance to see Manchester United’s new rail seating which has been installed ahead of the new season.

    12:37

    Kick-off approaching…

Just under ten minutes to go until kick-off for the final pre-season match for Manchester United and Everton, here’s a reminder of the two teams:

Man Utd XI: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Matic, Fernandes, Van de Beek; Greenwood, Martial, D James

Everton XI: Pickford; Coleman, Keane, Godfrey, Digne; Allan, Doucoure; Townsend, Iwobi, Gray; James R

    12:33

A chance for Donny to shine?

Despite Bruno Fernandes returning to the line-up, Donny van de Beek has been given a rare chance to start from the off for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

The Dutchman had a disappointing opening season at Old Trafford last term, playing in just half of United’s Premier League games with most of those appearances coming as a substitute.

A good performance this afternoon would put him in good stead for a starting spot against Leeds next weekend…

    12:26

    Three Lions back in action

The pain from England’s Euro 2020 still hasn’t worn off yet but Gareth Southgate’s stars are already back in action ahead of the new season.

Harry Maguire and Jordan Pickford had superb tournaments and will be looking to build on that as they chase Premier League titles and European qualification respectively.

Let’s not forget Luke Shaw as well, who scored against Italy in the Euro 2020 final, who starts alongside Maguire in the United defence.

The countdown to the Qatar 2022 World Cup starts now…

    12:12

    Players arriving at Old Trafford

Both sets of teams arriving into Old Trafford ahead of this afternoon’s game.

Rafa Benitez looks in a relaxed mood ahead of this pre-season clash. Old Trafford has not always been his happy hunting ground but he did manage a couple of stellar results as Liverpool manager. That 4-1 win in 2009 springs to mind.

Can he get another shock result today?

    12:09

    Lingard has Covid-19

Team news is not that important when it comes to pre-season but there is one piece of news that will affect Manchester United’s start to the season.

Jesse Lingard has contracted coronavirus so will not be involved in this afternoon’s match. This also means he is a doubt for the Red Devils’ opener against Leeds United next Saturday.

    12:02

    Big crowd at Old Trafford

    How good does this look?

As English football gears back up to capacity crowds once again, Old Trafford will welcome 55,000 fans this afternoon in one of the biggest football attendances since the pandemic first began.

    12:00

Pickford and James in Everton line-up

Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez picks a strong Everton side on his return to Old Trafford, one that includes James Rodriguez.

The Colombian has been linked a move away from Goodison Park this summer but will have his chance to show Benitez that he can contribute to the Toffees this season.

Jordan Pickford starts in goal for Everton after his Euro 2020 heroics, while Demarai Gray also lines up in the attack. There is no Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the squad.

    11:57

Maguire and Bruno start for United

The big news for Manchester United is that Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes return to the starting line-up in this pre-season campaign.

Maguire was involved in the Euro 2020 four weeks ago while Portuguese international Fernandes has been involved in training for some weeks now.

Paul Pogba, however, is on the bench, while Anthony Martial leads the line alongside Mason Greenwood and Dan James.

    11:55

    One more preparation test…

    One more week to go.

We are tantalisingly close to the start of the Premier League season and for both Manchester United and Everton, there are just seven days just to tinker with their squads ahead of their campaign bows.

Today they meet in a friendly in their final matches before they take to the field in the top-flight.

Kick off is at 12.45pm so let’s take a look at the team news.
